Dr. Gerardo E. van Halsema is an irrigation and water resources management specialist with extensive experience (>15 years) in Pakistan, Vietnam, East-Africa, Europe and Central America. From an initial focus on irrigation & agricultural water management, the attainment of sustainable water resources management through better alignment of agriculture and ecosystems (also with respect to climate change adaptation) has become a major field of integrative work. Through his previous employment at FAO in Rome, and his current employment at the Water Resources Management Group at Wageningen University, he has been extensively involved in policy support programs in the field of sustainable water resources management (International Conference and partnership on Water for Food and Ecosystems, UNECE-Water Convention, Ramsar Convention, Netherlands-Vietnam Partnership on the Mekong Delta Plan). He is engaged in education, capacity development programs in Vietnam, Bangladesh and Ethiopia, and research programs in the fields of water productivity, and ecosystem approaches in agriculture and water resources management.
