Organisation: European Citizens’ Initiative ’Water is a human right!'

Jerry van den Berge (1966, the Netherlands) obtained his MSc. in Tropical Land and Water Use in 1990 at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He has been a policy officer in the European federation of Public Services Unions (EPSU), based in Brussels, since 2010. He deals with EU policy and advocacy with a focus on water and waste industries, corporate policies and European Works Councils (EWCs). At the moment he is coordinating the European Citizens’ Initiative ’Water is a human right!’ He is an expert in Sustainable Development. He has been involved in the international trade union movement on climate change and on access to water and sanitation services. He is a member of the Global Union Researchers Network (GURN) and of the Justícia Hídrica (Water Justice) network. He joined the Dutch public services trade union Abvakabo FNV in 2001, first as a policy officer for social services, later as a policy officer for utilities (energy, water, waste). Working for the poor and marginalized marks his career. He gained his experience in the water sector in Saint Lucia (Caribbean), Brazil, and Nicaragua. In these countries he worked and did research on water management for local and national authorities in order to improve the living conditions of the rural poor.
