English language editor (closing date: 8 January 2010)
To handle the editing and the production of its international magazine, The Broker is looking for an experienced English language editor.
The editor will be responsible for:
- detailed editing and/or rewriting articles and other materials written mostly by non-native English speakers;
- carrying out background web research and checking facts as necessary;
- liaising with the editor in chief and authors;
- coordinating the in-house production of articles for publication in the printed magazine and the website;
- supervising the work of freelance copyeditors as and when necessary; and
- other related activities as required.
Applicants must be native English speakers with:
- a good honours degree from a recognized university; a postgraduate degree would definitely be an advantage;
- several years’ experience editing/rewriting academic texts for magazines and other publications aimed at a wide range of audiences;
- an eye for detail and journalistic style, with a proven ability to work effectively under pressure, and to deliver attractive, accurate and readable material to strict deadlines;
- a keen interest in and knowledge of international affairs, and a curiosity to learn more about the issues covered in The Broker;
- formal training in editing, writing and/or journalism would be a definite plus;
- a working knowledge of Dutch, German and/or Spanish would be an advantage;
- an EU passport or a valid EU work permit.

Note that this position is in-house, for four days per week (negotiable). Applicants seeking freelance work will not be considered. The successful candidate will be offered an initial fixed-term contract (period negotiable), with the possibility of extension. The remuneration package is highly competitive, commensurate with experience. Place of work is Leiden/Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
