Overpopulation the unspeakable taboo?

Dear Broker

I really like your magazine, more and more. I advertise it wildly in my various global networks.

Since quite some time I struggle with an uncertainty. I remember the days that a French sociologist in Dakar convinced me that Africa is UNDER populated (early 80's).

But... isn't it also true that:

  1. Overpopulation is indeed a taboo topic in most development agencies and at most international development events
  2. That climate change, to the extend that it may be caused by humanity, in the end finds it's root cause in OVERpopulation or if you like
exploiting and affecting 'nature' and natural resources by an ever increasing (global) demand
  3. That it is unlikely, as it looks now, that humanity will curtail it's pressure on our common environment voluntarily to the scale necessary to reduce our impact on climate change
  4. That on the contrary it is likely that increased purchasing power in countries like China and India (but not only) will very rapidly increase human impact on climate change (and not only!)
  5. That addressing OVERpopulation is indeed a tricky issue coming with a high risk to have increased inequity consequences (see experiences in China and India)
  6. BUT... that we, human beings, should at least have the guts and the honesty to be aware and admit that, seen our behaviour, OVERpopulation in increasingly a fact and should become a topic for discussion.

If you agree, or even if you don't, I'd appreciate if the Broker would have the courage to at least explore if a special issue on global (OVER)population would be worthwhile.

Best greetings from Zola Predosa
Peter J. Bury
