Emerging Agendas for Development-oriented Research

Just published: Knowledge on the Move

Research intended to contribute to development in the South is in crisis. Globalization has changed the concept of development and the nature of North-South research partnerships. Research policies and collaborative practices need urgently to be adapted to produce the knowledge that is required to address new demands and complex processes of change in developing countries. In this book, prominent researchers from both the North and the South explore emerging trends in their fields of research, including trade, migration, human rights, agriculture, climate and governance, as wll as the process of research communication itself.

In the last part of this volume, two prominent Dutch politicians, former Minister for Development Cooperation, Jan Pronk, and the current Minister, Bert Koenders, both eminent scholars in their own right, respond to the challenges presented in this book and discuss their policy implications.

Advance reviews

  • Knowledge on the Move reveals a rapidly expanding research agenda linking cutting-edge scientific challenges with highly relevant global social issues. It challenges researchers, policy makers and development practitioners alike and opens up new perspectives on science policy and practice.

    Jos Engelen
Chairman of the Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NOW), The Hague, the Netherlands

  • Knowledge on the Move reflects the outcome of a vibrant conference at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in February 2008. The conference focused on three dimensions of international cooperation in research for development: building equal research partnerships, shaping capacity development in the field of research, and embedding research in society to ensure applications and valorization of the research outcomes. This book is a must for anyone interested in mobilizing pioneering research for development.

    Martin Kropff
Rector Magnificus and Vice President of the Executive Board, Wageningen University and Research Centre, the Netherlands
