How can we strengthen global citizenship in the Netherlands and better integrate it into policy, education, and society? That was the key question driving our recent quick scan project for Partos.
To get to this answer we did a small quick scan to map the landscape of this topic: What is currently happening? Who is actively involved? Drawing insights from available literature and evaluations and conversations with experts and civil society organisations, we explored both the challenges and opportunities and outlined recommendations for the way forward.
The result?
Report: Opportunity Analysis: Strengthening Global Citizenship in the Netherlands (Kansenanalyse Versterking van Wereldburgerschap in Nederland).
Key insights from the study:
-
- Many initiatives exist, but lack central coordination: The Netherlands already has numerous initiatives promoting global citizenship, but a lack of collaboration and structural support often limits their impact. Greater coherence is needed to enhance effectiveness.
- Education plays a key role: Global citizenship education has made significant progress in schools in the last 20 years, but it is not a mandatory part of the curriculum. There are opportunities to better anchor global citizenship in education through subjects that are prioritised, such as the Dutch language and mathematics.
- Global Citizenship should be made concrete and actionable to inspire new crowds: Today’s problems can leave people feeling discouraged. People ask themselves: ‘What can I do? Does what I do even matter?’ To counter this, we should focus on positive communication: make actions that people can take concrete and practical, and highlight success stories.
