Plugging African Women into Clean Energy

07 Nov 2024Siri Lijfering | Ruth van de Velde

Indalo Inclusive and The Broker are kicking off a partnership to explore actionable pathways for advancing opportunities for women entrepreneurs in Africa’s clean energy sector. Combining Indalo Inclusive’s expertise in building an inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem in South Africa with The Broker’s knowledge in clean energy and green entrepreneurship, the collaboration aims to facilitate gender responsive and locally-led solutions.

The research focuses on gender-responsive practices within Entrepreneur Support Organisations (ESOs) to understand how these practices impact women entrepreneurs’ participation, growth, and success, particularly in South Africa’s solar sector. By addressing the challenges women face in the clean energy sector, the study aims to develop a practical toolkit that ESOs can use to enhance their programmes for women entrepreneurs.

The project follows an action-oriented research approach, validating insights through real-world piloting and testing within active programme settings. Key objectives include:

  • Reviewing existing literature to build a knowledge base.
  • Conducting interviews and case studies to generate new insights.
  • Facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogues to co-create solutions.
  • Developing an actionable toolkit for ESOs, which will be tested through a gender-focused entrepreneurship programme.
  • Engaging stakeholders to validate findings and ensure broader impact.

This partnership between Indalo Inclusive and The Broker sets out to address gender disparities in the clean energy sector, empowering women to lead the charge in the low carbon transition in Africa.
