These indicators of the absence of violence or fear of violence are based on the Global Peace Index. This broad range of Indicators of Peace has first been selected with an expert panel in 2007 and provides for a way to measure peace.

In addition to these 24 main indicators, the authors took into account 33 other indicators in areas such as the competence and quality of governments, the strength of institutions, political processes, international openness, demography, regional integration, religion, culture, education and well-being.
