An anniversary is a logical time to look back and reflect on lessons from the past, while also looking ahead. That is exactly what the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department (IOB) of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs did when it celebrated its 40th anniversary with a Lustrum Symposium ‘Changing directions in foreign policy – IOB at 40: learning for performance’. Bringing together policymakers, evaluators and knowledge workers, this event provided an opportunity to discuss ways forward for policy evaluation.

To record this special event and share its results and insights, The Broker was present to make a video report. The video synthesizes the key events of the day with impressions and interviews with speakers. The result is not just a nice looking video, but also a summary of the valuable knowledge shared throughout the day.

In 14 interactive workshops, participants reflected on the current (and future) foreign policy questions on IOB’s evaluation agenda. A key takeaway from this day is that IOB can count on the support of an interested, active and knowledgeable network of stakeholders from widely different backgrounds, who are keen to share their expertise and feedback. Moreover, IOB gave ear to participants’ call for an examination of ways to meet the demand for more flexible and learning-driven evaluation products and methods.
