- Koen Davidse, a Dutch official, has been appointed the new head of MINUSMA. He will succeed Arnauld Akodjènou of Benin at the end of September.
- On 23 August the CMA pulled out of the committee set up to monitor the implementation of the peace accord, stating they would suspend their participation ‘until stability returned on the ground’.. - There were clashes between the pro-government Groupe Autodéfense Touareg Imghad et Alliés (GATIA) and the rebel Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA) around the northern towns of Touzik, Anéfis and Amassine on 15, 16 and 17 August. GATIA managed to seize the town of Anéfis from the CMA, but agreed to withdraw on 30 August following a request by President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and the threat of UN sanctions. - After eight months of hard talks, the Algiers process resulted in a ceasefire agreement with a final draft of a peace plan on 1 March 2015. The preliminary agreement has been signed by the Government-led coalition, but on 16 March the Coordination of Movements of the Azawad decided not to sign. Morten Bøås reflects on what other agreement is possible. Sofia Sebastian explains that for the peace process to be successful it needs to have a broader focus.
